FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Skid Steer Forestry Drum Mulcher

Deciding whether a disc mulcher or a drum mulcher is better depends on your specific needs and the terrain. Disc mulchers are ideal for quick, efficient clearing of light brush and small trees, offering excellent maneuverability. Drum mulchers, in contrast, excel in tackling dense, heavy vegetation and larger trees, providing a more consistent and thorough mulching result. Your choice should be guided by the type of vegetation you're dealing with and the desired outcome of your mulching project.
The best drum mulcher for you largely depends on the nature of your work and the machinery you use. For those operating skid steers and seeking a reliable and efficient attachment, the Skid Steer Forestry Drum Mulcher "Assassinator" from Rut Manufacturing comes highly recommended. Known for its durability and effective mulching capabilities, the Assassinator is a popular choice among professionals looking to tackle a variety of vegetation with precision and power. Always ensure that any mulcher you consider is compatible with your equipment and meets your specific project needs.
Yes, operating a mulcher can be hard on a skid steer due to the intense pressure and heavy workload it places on the machine's hydraulic system and engine. Continuous use, especially in tough conditions, can lead to increased wear and tear. To minimize the strain, it's crucial to use a skid steer that's appropriately sized and powered for the mulching task at hand, and to conduct regular maintenance.
To run a mulcher effectively, you typically need a skid steer with at least 60 to 70 horsepower and a high-flow hydraulic system, usually in the range of 30 to 45 gallons per minute. Larger and more robust mulchers might require skid steers with over 80 horsepower and even higher hydraulic flow capabilities. It's crucial to match the mulcher's requirements with the skid steer's specifications for safe and efficient operation, so always check the manufacturer's recommendations for both the mulcher and the skid steer.
The number of acres a drum mulcher can clear in a day varies widely based on the density of the vegetation, the type of terrain, and the power of the mulcher and its carrier vehicle. On average, a powerful drum mulcher operated under optimal conditions on moderately dense vegetation might clear between 2 to 4 acres per day.
A skid steer drum mulcher is an attachment for skid steer loaders designed to shred vegetation, such as bushes, small trees, and other foliage, into mulch. It consists of a rotating drum lined with steel or carbide teeth that grind down plant material. This tool is essential for land clearing, forestry management, and site preparation.
The skid steer drum mulcher operates by attaching to the front of a skid steer loader. Once activated, the rotating drum turns at high speeds, and its teeth aggressively tear through vegetation and trees. The mulched material is then dispersed evenly over the ground, promoting faster decomposition and nutrient return to the soil.
Using a skid steer drum mulcher offers numerous benefits. It provides an efficient and eco-friendly way to clear land, as it leaves behind a layer of mulch that helps control erosion and replenish the soil. It's also versatile, able to handle various terrains and plant densities. Moreover, it reduces the need for multiple machines, saving time and operational costs.
Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and performance of a skid steer drum mulcher. Regularly inspect the teeth and drum for wear and damage, ensuring they are sharp and securely fastened. Hydraulic components should be checked for leaks and the correct pressure. Additionally, clean the mulcher after each use to prevent buildup and potential damage.
When choosing a skid steer drum mulcher, consider the size and power of your skid steer loader, as it must be capable of supporting the mulcher's weight and power requirements. Look at the mulcher's width and tooth design to ensure it suits your specific needs. Also, consider the manufacturer's reputation and the availability of replacement parts and service.
To effectively run a forestry mulcher, you typically need a skid steer with at least 70 to 90 horsepower and a high-flow hydraulic system, which is usually around 30 to 45 gallons per minute. The size and weight of the skid steer also matter; you'll likely need a machine that weighs at least 7,000 pounds to handle the additional weight and balance of the mulcher.

I had ordered a BRUSH CUTTER FOR SKID STEER, CTL, AND MTL 60″ RUT MFG TERMINATOR 15-27 GPM at the end of last year and finally was able to use it for the first time here on our farm. I have 60 acres with about 50 of those being heavily wooded with multiflora rose, up to 5″ or 5″ grapevines, and thick growth of who knows what. Today is my fourth day of using this Brush Cutter for RUT MFG and I couldn’t be happier with this piece of machinery. When I ordered, I had Tony install stump grinding teeth (I think there are 22 of them) and that really helps when I cut a tree and then use the teeth to grind down near ground level. I highly recommend using RUT MFG. Feel free to reach out to me if you care to check up on my thoughts in a month or two.

Excavator mounted log splitter is spot on. Split and load wood and never leave the seat of your machine. Wish I had this many years ago. Rut fitted the unit to my machine easily, I installed the unit and went to work!!
